Planning and Scheduling - How effective is it in your company?

I conducted a survey of over 300 facilities worldwide and found only 2 % were performing to best practices in Maintenance Planning and about the same Scheduling Maintenance. I think it is important to define best practice for planning and make a process which is focused and disciplined, no calling the planner to expedite parts. In my opinion, I believe scheduling has to evolve from scheduling by week to by day. It is difficult and that is why I always suggest planning and scheduling training for everyone from the plant manager (2 hours) to the Maintenance craft personnel (4 hours). The problem is not just planning and scheduling because it begins at how you identify work and hopefully most of your work comes from PM or PdM and not breakdowns.

How does your organization operate planning and scheduling? I have seen some companies using unique ways to plan and schedule that are awesome and others that need to go away.

Planning and scheduling is certainly vital to the effective and efficient running of the company, or company asset i.e. an oil rig. Operational planning failure could have a detrimental impact on the commercial viability of the project. How useful is IT in the planning and scheduling of projects in the oil & gas industry? Can it overtake the power of the human imagination? I work in a country where unprecedented events occur all the time, namely Brazil, and where human creativity is necessary to improvise new solutions to problem, which incidentally deviates from the original plan and schedule preapared - but which enables the overall productivity of the asset to be maximised without compromising on the overall scheduling.

Planned maintenance is the best way of maintaining machinery and equipments, as it is rightly said that precaution is better than cure.

E-version of planned maintenance tools is very helpful in reminding the maintenance scheduled and recoding the maintenance information.

The information about maintenance works as history and can be retrieved as and when requierd.

Maintaining discipline is key of success and delivering the value to customer.

I came to this website looking for information regarding "Petroleum Sellers / Refinery's."
Someone who deals with the Maintenance and Reliability of different Gas & Oil Companies would know who is Reliable, Honest, and who has been around for a long time and is known for maintaining good customer relations.
I would love to hear from you, and would very much appreciate it if you could provide me with any information regarding some good companies that you have either dealt with or know by reputation.

Thank you in advance for all your time.
Sincerely, Victoria

Machine behaves like human-beings, it gives simptoms before it fails, each part has fatique time, that varies with its composition and also breaths differently with external lubrication. If we put all these data together, we will do best planning and scheduling of maintenance. It should be behavioral planning maintenance, the best practice to reduce time and eventual overall costs to sustain in this competitive market.

Rall,

Great point, the key is the identification of a defect far enough in advance so a repair or restoration can be planned and scheduled without panic.

I made positive improvements in our maintenance scheduling when I started consulting a new service provider, Sprint Safety. They implemented more sophisticated and customized reporting than we had used previously. I have also found there corporate partner Tidal Tank, has helped to streamline our tank rental coordination with up to the minute on-line access to satellite-tracked information on every tank we have on rent. I would say that IT is definably useful in planning projects for the petro industry. You can see the companies I mentioned; www.sprintsafety.com & www.tidaltank.com.
