My belief is Maintenance Supervisors are the key to effective maintenance work execution and thus hold the key to optimizing equipment reliability.
If you agree, how do we make this happen? How do you engage maintenance supervisors to motivate their maintenance team to be efficient and effective?

If you were to perform an Root Cause Analysis of most failures you will see the maintenance supervisor could have prevented that failure. However, let's do not be to quick to blame them. They need a good education in maintenance and reliability best practices so they understand the impact of doing things right. Many times they get blamed for a problem however we do not support them 100%. Just a thought, not a sermon based on time as a maintenance supervisor.
Maintainable of oil gas are really such a heavy work. Now the fuel is getting short day by day. So it should be maintained carefully.

Accomplishing change is the key and the important elements to be managed - a sort of checklist -include: vision, skills, incentives, resources, action plan and required data. Missing any one of these elements is likely to lead to an unsuccessful operation.

Maintenance supervisor with some knowledge on how to inspect their equipment, as well as failure degradation mechanisms knowledge are definitely will be a plus in order to prevent the failure. I think if they have basic idea of API 510, 570, and general damage mechanisms will do them a great deal for maintenance and reliability. So that they can be first hand inspector and maintenance personnel. But they must have access to get such educational exposure.

In many of the companies, Maintenance supervisors are not supervising the maintenance activity. Rather than that, they work as the work preparer and due to the reactive mode they are under production pressure to fix the problem as quickly as possible. They culture of rewarding failures also helps them to follow the dog's tail. Therefore they become Good in fixing failures, rather than Avoiding failures. It is therefore essential to have some Reliability personnel within each company, who should increase awareness level about practical reliability knowledge within the company and help the Maintenance do the right job in reliability context.
It is difficult for a maintenance supervisor can be successful if he/she works in a reactive environment. The number one thing which will help a supervisor become successful is to focus only on their sphere of influence and not focus on your area of concern (Steven Covey taught me this). If you do this your area of influence will grow so work. Begin introducing your crew to proactive maintenance. Start by measuring MTBF for the equipment you are managing and allow your people to know their score in the game.
Great post. I hope you can write more good stuff like this article.
